Whatever you choose to do, make a routine of it to keep your toothbrush as clean and germ-free as possible.
Wash Hands Before Brushing
The coronavirus is transmitted by touching your face, especially your mouth. What people often forget is that your hands touch your toothbrush, which in turn goes in your mouth. Be sure to wash your hands before you engage in your oral hygiene routine.
Store Your Toothbrush in an Open Place
You might think that placing a cover over your brush will keep it cleaner, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Keeping your brush in a dark, damp place like this can actually foster a breeding ground for germs like the coronavirus. Instead, store it in a toothbrush holder. If you share a bathroom, each person should have their own holder to avoid contact. Remember to keep the holder as far away from the toilet as possible to avoid the aerosols produced when you flush.
Don’t Share Toothpaste or Floss
It should go without saying that you shouldn’t share your toothbrush, even with your partner. However, did you know the same rule applies to containers of floss and tubes of toothpaste? These items can also transmit germs among people who share a living space. Each person in the household should have their own toothpaste and floss.
Replace Your Toothbrush If You Get Sick
Every time you have some kind of infection, whether it be bacterial or viral, you need to switch out your toothbrush for a new one. Otherwise, the germs still present on your brush could infect you all over again. Also, you should replace your brush every three months anyway, as it will start to be less effective after that amount of time.
