If you are currently using Invisalign to discreetly achieve your smile goals, then you know firsthand the panicky feeling that takes over when you realize your aligners are nowhere to be found. Immediately, you begin frantically searching your home for your clear trays (which is the one time you wish they weren’t so invisible). If your attempt to locate your aligners is unsuccessful, then keep reading to learn a few of the do’s and don’ts of what to do next.

Don’t Panic

When you first realize your trays aren’t where they should be, your initial reaction may be to panic. However, a frazzled mind won’t help you find your aligners any sooner. So, take a deep breath and calmly retrace your steps. Make sure to pay attention to the small spaces they could’ve fallen into and the unusual places they could’ve ended up, like in the trash can.

Do Contact Your Dental Team Right Away

To stay on track with your treatment timeline, you must wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours each day. Neglecting to do so can cause your teeth to begin to drift into their previous position, leaving you back at square one. That’s why getting in touch with your dental team right away is of the utmost importance! From there, they can provide you with the next best steps to ensure your smile goals don’t suffer.

Don’t Advance Early

All too often, patients attempt to remedy the situation by starting the next set of trays early. While this may initially sound like a good idea, it is important to remember that each aligner is designed for that specific phase of your treatment. Skipping ahead can affect how your teeth are tracking, extending your time with Invisalign significantly.

Do Be Proactive

The best way to prevent potentially derailing your orthodontic treatment is to be proactive. To start, make sure to only remove your aligners when you are eating, drinking, and completing your oral hygiene routine. When you do take them out, store them in a sturdy, brightly colored case, which will significantly reduce the likelihood of them accidentally being misplaced or thrown away.

Losing your Invisalign aligners can be anxiety-inducing. Fortunately, following the above do’s and don’ts can prevent the likelihood of this situation negatively impacting your treatment!
