If you have an upcoming wisdom tooth removal surgery, you might be nervous about the overall experience. However, it’s an extremely common procedure that’s performed every year, so there’s nothing to be afraid of! Like any surgery, post-operative care is highly important to reduce your recovery time and promote faster healing. Fortunately, there are many steps you can take to ensure a smooth sailing experience. Here are a few tips you should follow for a speedy and problem-free recovery after wisdom tooth removal.
Gently Bite Down on Gauze
Immediately following wisdom tooth surgery, your dentist will ask you to bite down on gauze to stop the bleeding from the surgical site. It helps form blood clots, which are crucial for your recovery since they protect the exposed bone and wound from infection. Keep the gauze in place for at least a half-hour after extraction or until the bleeding stops.
Apply a Cold Compress
One of the most widely used pain relief strategies for wisdom tooth removal is icing the jaw and cheek. Wrap an ice pack in a clean towel and apply it on your cheek over the extraction site for 15 to 20 minutes. Allow your face to rest for 20 minutes before applying ice again. It helps minimize any bruising and swelling that may occur following your surgery.
Take Prescribed Medication as Directed
For some patients, ibuprofen like Advil might be sufficient for pain relief. However, others might require stronger pain killers. If your dentist prescribed any medications, be sure to take them as directed. Even if the swelling and pain have reduced significantly, you must complete the prescribed dosage for antibiotics to combat and prevent infections.
Keep Your Mouth Clean
If your dentist has allowed you to brush your teeth on the night of your surgery, make sure you’re very gentle when cleaning the area near the extraction site. Otherwise, you could dislodge the blood clot and leave the area vulnerable to infection. The day after your procedure, you can rinse your mouth with warm saltwater. Rinse at least five times a day, especially after every meal.
Watch Your Diet
For the first few days of recovery, you should stick to soft and easy-to-chew foods. Even though your diet is limited, it’s still just as crucial to feed your body the nutrients it needs to thrive. To ease swelling and lower your risk of complications, try eating nutrient-packed meals like blended soups, broths, mashed vegetables, avocados, and Jell-O.
Rest as Much as Possible
Most patients can return to their normal day-to-day activities after the procedure. However, you will need to give your body plenty of time to rest. Doing so will help your body heal faster! Plus, getting at least seven to nine hours of sleep each night can help alleviate some of your swelling.
Wisdom tooth removal might sound scary and painful, but it certainly does not have to be that way. By following the tips outlined above, you can ensure you have a speedy and smooth-sailing recovery!
