Get to Know Dr. Ami Mata
Dr. Mata says that the most fulfilling part of being a dentist is having the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives every day, whether she is getting someone out of pain or giving them a smile makeover. She’s thrilled to be a part of the excellent team at On Point Dentistry, and she looks forward to welcoming you into our practice. To learn a little more about her ahead of your visit, read on below.
Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist?
Growing up, Dr. Mata’s family, especially her father, did not have the best experiences with dentists. The quality of work always left him in pain and caused him to be distrustful of the profession. Seeing this daily encouraged her to learn about dentistry so she could hopefully, one day, be able to help her dad and also be the kind of dentist that could offer change to a person in the same scenario.
Where Did You Study Dentistry?
Dr. Mata began her training as a dental assistant as a junior in high school. At the end of her senior year, she graduated as a registered dental assistant and worked as one throughout her undergraduate education. After receiving her bachelor’s degree at UNT, she met our own Dr. Marco Caballeros during a summer enrichment program at the Texas A&M College of Dentistry. He was her dental lab skills instructor! After learning as much as she could from him, he asked her to join his team as he opened his own dental practice. She agreed and worked as his dental assistant for over a year.
Throughout that time, he along with her family encouraged her to further her education and apply to dental school. To make her application more competitive, she completed a yearlong post-baccalaureate program at UTD. After its completion, she was admitted to the Texas A&M College of Dentistry, and four long years later, she graduated with her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. Today, she is a proud member of the American Dental Association and Academy of General Dentistry.
Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?
Dr. Mata’s favorite thing to do away from the office is go hiking. She likes searching for new trails, and any vacations she takes usually has at least one full day of hiking. Her other hobbies include exploring new places in town and spending time with family and friends.
