Searching for a new dentist is tough! Sure, you could do a quick online search and find the one that is closest to your home, or you could just pick the first dental practice that you see listed in the phone book. However, taking such a fast approach to finding a dentist may leave you with regrets. You could end entrusting your oral health to someone whom you aren’t comfortable with or, worse, who doesn’t have the expertise and compassion needed to care for your smile in the best way. To help you avoid such problems, here are a few tips to assist you in your quest for the perfect dentist.
Know What You Need
Any dentist can provide general care, such as cleanings and checkups. However, if you have specific concerns about your oral health, look for someone who has expertise in those areas. For example, if you are a smoker (or you used to smoke), it would be wise to choose a dentist who offers oral cancer screenings. If you have missing teeth, it might be best to pick someone who had had training in dental implant placement.
Look for Someone You’re Comfortable With
You also need to consider your emotions. Some people don’t mind going to a dental practice where every patient is a number. However, if you want to form a relationship with your dentist and receive an empathetic and personal touch, you’re going to need to do a bit more searching. By looking at online reviews and asking your friends for recommendations on a dentist, you might be able to find one who is right for you.
If you have serious dental fears, that also needs to play a role in your search. Some dentists offer sedation to help ease your anxiety and make your appointments as painless and comfortable as possible.
Visit the Office
If you’ve narrowed down your list of potential dentists to a few candidates, it’s time to do some in-person research. You can stop by each office and bring any questions you have about the practice. You can meet a few members of the staff and take in the atmosphere there. If the place is clean, and if the patients who are waiting to be seen look relaxed and comfortable, you know you’re pointed in the right direction.
Dental services can be on the expensive side. If you think you need to have some significant work done, you’ll need to visit a dentist who is willing to work with your insurance. Even if they aren’t in-network with your plan, some dentists are still willing to work with your provider to make sure you get the care you need at a price you can afford.
There are tons of great dentists out there! We hope you find the one that is just right for you.
