Your Dentist Explains How to Maintain Good Oral Health This Fall

Family in the fall. Fall is officially here! That means football, holidays, and fun for you and your loved ones. Fall brings the cooler weather, but it also brings tailgating snacks, hot chocolate, and sweet treats with pumpkin spice. These delicious indulgences are great to eat every once in a while, but they can also hurt your oral health. Keep reading to learn some tips on how to maintain good oral health this fall from a trusted dentist.

Eating and Drinking Habits

Although burgers and hotdogs are a tailgating staple this fall, you can switch up your meat selection to benefit your teeth and overall health. Cooking lean meats like chicken or turkey can still give you iron that your mouth needs, but they also contain niacin. A lack of niacin can lead to lingering bad breath and sores in your mouth.

Do you need a snack while watching the big game or out with your friends? Try raw vegetables. These fiber-rich veggies stimulate saliva flow, which washes away sugar and bacteria from your teeth and helps to prevent cavities.

If you do decide to indulge in this fall’s offerings like candy apples or pumpkin pie, make sure you brush your teeth afterwards. If you don’t have a toothbrush handy because you are out and about or at a tailgate, at least rinse your mouth out with water to wash away some of the bacteria and food debris.

Oral Hygiene Habits

While avoiding certain foods during this season will decrease your chances of dental issues like cavities, there is no substitute for good oral hygiene habits. Be sure to brush your teeth every day, twice a day, to keep your teeth healthy and white. Additionally, floss your teeth once a day to clean out plaque and debris from in between them. You can finish off your routine with a mouth wash but talk to your local dentist about which one they would recommend.

Last but not least, maintain regular dental checkups and cleanings every 6 months. These become especially important during the holidays because your dentist can help pick up the slack from some of the cookies and other treats you may be enjoying.

Use our tips on good oral health care to keep your smile healthy and beautiful this fall. When you do decide to pick up a sugary treat, enjoy it, but also make time to see your dentist to be sure your teeth are shining and cavity free!
