Invisalign on top

Are you an adult with crooked teeth? You may have heard about Invisalign, the set of clear plastic aligners that can straighten your smile without the need for clunky, restrictive braces. But what if it’s just your top teeth that are misaligned? Can you only get Invisalign in Carrollton on your top teeth? Keep reading to find out.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Instead of metal brackets and wires, Invisalign uses clear plastic trays custom made to fit the shape of your teeth. You’ll wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, as prescribed by your dentist. Then you’ll switch to the next set, which moves your teeth closer to their destination of being perfectly straight.

You’ll have to wear your aligners for at least 22 hours a day. Essentially, you’ll only remove them when eating and brushing your teeth. As long as you keep your aligners clean, no one will even be able to tell you’re wearing them! Your smile will be straightened almost unnoticeably.

Can I Just Get Invisalign On the Top?

Getting Invisalign on just the top or bottom teeth is called single arch treatment. Typically, your dentist will not recommend single arch treatment. However, usually your bottom teeth are not visible. So then why do you normally need treatment for both arches?

The main reason is because Invisalign treats your overall bite as well as the alignment of your teeth. For example, if you have an overbite and only straighten the top teeth, your top teeth will appear straighter but your bite as a whole will be thrown out of whack and may require further orthodontic treatment, such as braces, to fix. You’re much better off wearing your aligners on both arches so as to not jeopardize your bite.

Am I a Good Candidate for Invisalign?

Invisalign is an excellent treatment is you have the following issues to correct:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Gapped teeth
  • Mildly to moderately misaligned teeth

However, if your teeth are severely misaligned, you may need braces to treat them. Ask your dentist which option would benefit you more.

If you’re going to wear Invisalign, you also have to be dedicated to treatment. You must be willing to wear your aligners at all hours of the day except for eating and brushing your teeth. Taking them out and neglecting to put them back in again could compromise your treatment. In addition, Invisalign is recommended for adults and older teenagers. Children’s teeth are still shifting, so your dentist will likely suggest waiting until their smiles are fully developed before prescribing treatment.

Although you may not be able to get Invisalign on just the top, it’s still worth wearing it on the bottom as well. Your bite will be more aligned, and on the off chance that someone sees your bottom teeth, they will be nice and straight. Ask your dentist whether Invisalign is right for you.
