When February arrives, New Year’s resolutions often become a distant memory. But that doesn’t have to be the case. If one of your goals for the new year is to have a healthier smile, flossing regularly will definitely help you achieve it. Studies show that only 30 percent of adults floss daily. Don’t let this be you! Keep reading for 3 ways to help make sure you stick to your dental health goals.

Be Realistic with Your Goals

If you barely flossed in 2020, it’s highly unlikely that you will be able to jump into flossing regularly. The best way to start is baby steps. If flossing hasn’t been part of your regular dental care, try starting with a goal of twice a week for the first month, three times a week the next month, and so on until you it’s time for your annual visit to the dentist. Selecting specific flossing days ahead of time can help as well. For example, the first month, try flossing Mondays and Fridays. The following month, you can try Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Knowing which days you’ll floss and committing to them can make it easier to stick to your goal.

Make Your Enemy Visible

Plaque is clear and only becomes visible when it builds up. But even then, it can be difficult to spot. Brushing with a toothpaste or rinsing with a mouthwash that highlights the plaque that is left behind after brushing. It is a lot easier to fight your enemy when you can see it.

Choose a Flossing Tool You Enjoy Using

The classic mint dental floss can be very boring and uninspiring. The good news is that it doesn’t just come in mint anymore! Aside from cinnamon, floss also comes in strawberry and cupcake! There are even options that are infused with coconut and fruit oils! If you prefer gadgets, water flossers can be a great option as well.

In addition to visiting your dentist on a regular basis, your at-home dental care routine is crucial to improving your oral health. Flossing helps fight cavities and gingivitis, which can both lead to more serious dental issues. Now is the time to set yourself up for success so you can get the gorgeous smile you deserve.
